About Me

security

My name is LEIGH MASON and I have been involved in the training of dogs for over 30 years, my first involvement was as a young 15 year old when I had a job as a kennel hand at Karenswood Kennels in Birmingham. I began to gain experience in training obedience and protection with a variety of dogs. I joined the Army at 16 and passed my Parachute selection joining 7TH PARACHUTE REGIMENT RHA, whilst in the Army I had some involvement with tracking dogs whilst based in Cyprus. I left the Army in 1992 and joined Thames Valley Police where I worked on the beat in Newbury and Reading, I qualified as a police evidence gatherer and worked on the demonstrations at the Newbury Bypass and The Witney Cat Farm, I also qualified as a Staff Personal Safety Instructor and have taught all aspects of Police Self Defence over many years.

My involvement with dogs began again when I managed to join the forces Dog Section as a handler in 2000, I qualified after attending an initial General Purpose Course and patrolled the streets of Reading with SULTAN my first Police dog, after only 18 months myself and Sultan qualified to work as a Tactical Support Dog Team working in conjunction with the Forces Firearms Department, we had many successful deployments and numerous commendations for our work. I also qualified as a Specialist Search Dog Handler with TIM a Black Labrador. In 2005 I was devastated when Sultan passed away and I had to attend another General Purpose Initial Course where I qualified with Police Dog CAP. I became very interested in training at this point and became a tutor which involved the bringing on of new handlers once they had passed their initial course. In 2007 I was recruited as a Operational Skills Trainer for the Dog Section which involver the setting up of exercises on a police area where the dog teams could practice their skills on the area they worked.

In 2007 I attended my ACPO General Purpose Police Dog Instructors Course at The Metropolitan Police Dog School at Keston in Kent. After qualifying I returned to the school and began to run various courses, including Tactical Support Initial Courses and General Purpose Initial Courses. In 2008 I attended a Clicker Instructors Course and I gained a qualification in classroom based teaching. In 2009 I attended a Baiters Course with The Surrey Police Dog School.

I have trained and boarded dogs for many years and have had many successful clients who have passed on my details to their friends and colleagues.

I am involved in Trials training and attend a club in Newbury this club is called the Mali Club and offers training in all aspects of Dog Training, these include Protection, Tracking, Obedience, Agility and searching.

My retirement from the police is looming large and I feel it is time to prepare my self for civi street, which is why I have produced this web site.

My training is all reward based using either food or toy reward, in my opinion the training needs to be enjoyable for both the owner and the dog if either are stressed or not enjoying the training then that will cause a block to learning which can cause frustration and a lack of motivation.
